Born in 1961 and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Mike Wimmer has been sketching and painting since age 6. His stepfather brought home paper and cardboard from his job at a box factory for him to draw on while his mother, then a college student and later a teacher at Mikeʼs middle school, introduced him to the world of books. Wimmer was deeply impressed with the classic adventure stories such as Treasure Island, especially those with the illustrations of such greats as N.C.Wyeth and Harvard Pyle. Excelling both academically and athletically in high school, he began to take his artistic aspirations seriously as his graduation approached. He turned down his mother’s offer to pay his college tuition if he would work on a degree in a “practical field” such as law or medicine. Instead, Wimmer followed his grandfather’s advice, that if he did what he loved he would excel and he would be richly compensated for it as well. Accordingly, he paid his own way when he started a bachelor of art program at the University of Oklahoma in 1979. Two years of the program were at the Sketchpad Studio in Arlington, Texas on a commercial arts apprenticeship. His graduation in 1984 was made even sweeter by the fact that his own design was used on the diploma he and his fellow graduates received. His first freelance assignments barely paid his and his new wife’s bills. But, gradually through hard work (completing upwards of 150 paintings a year), he established himself as a respected commercial artist. Wimmer currently lives in Norman, Oklahoma, with his wife and their two children.

TED ORLAND graduated from of the University of Southern California in
1963 with a degree in Industrial Design, and began his professional career working for several years as a graphic artist for designer Charles Eames. In 1966, Ted enrolled in as a fledgling photographer in Ansel Adams’ Yosemite Photography Workshop –an event which markedly changed the course of his artistic life. He returned to Yosemite as Ansel’s workshop assistant the following year, and in 1970 moved to Carmel to work fulltime as Ansel’s Assistant and printer of Adams’ Yosemite Special Edition Prints. Ted also returned for fifteen seasons as an Instructor at Ansel’s Yosemite Workshops. During this period Ted also earned a Masters Degree in Interdisciplinary Creative Arts from San Francisco State University, and began a second career in teaching. Ted has held fulltime positions at Stanford University and University of Oregon, and has taught part-time at a number of schools (including Cabrillo College, where he currently teaches Digital Photography). Ted has also led master classes in artistic development at workshop Centers across the country, including Maine Photography Workshops, Penland School of Crafts and University of California Extension.
In 1985 Ted self-published his first book, Man & Yosemite, which traces the early history of Yosemite as it can be interpreted through photographs of the period. A large selection of Ted’s early photographs and writings appear in his monograph, Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity. Ted is also co-author (with David Bayles) of the classic artists’ survival guide, Art & Fear, and is author of its recent companion volume, The View From The Studio Door.
Today Ted Orland lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he continues his parallel careers in teaching, writing and photography.

Guest Speaker, Ted Orland

TED ORLAND lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he pursues parallel careers in teaching, writing & photography. He began his professional career working as a young graphic artist for designer Charles Eames, and in the 1970’s became Assistant to photographer Ansel Adams and printer of Adams’ Yosemite Special Edition Prints. Ted taught traditional photography at Adams’ Annual Yosemite Workshop for fifteen years, and currently teaches digital imaging at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz CA, as well as offering Master Class workshops nationally. In earlier times Ted also taught full-time at Stanford University and at the University of Oregon.

Ted is co-author (with David Bayles) of the classic artist’s survival guide, Art & Fear, and is author of its companion volume, The View From The Studio Door. Ted also wrote Man & Yosemite, a history of nineteenth century Yosemite as revealed in photographs of the period, and is currently preparing an enlarged and updated version of that book. And on a much lighter note, he created the underground classic Photographic Truths poster. (Ted is also founder and owner of the Image Continuum Press, which published all of these works.)

Ted’s personal photography honors the West Coast tradition of fine craftsmanship and printmaking while engaging a wide range of contemporary subject matter. His photographs are widely exhibited, and appear in major museum collections nationally, including those at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Amon Carter Museum in Dallas TX and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan. A large selection of Ted’s earlier photographic art appears in his monograph Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity, while examples of his newest work appear in Michelle Bates’ anthology, Plastic Cameras: Toying With Reality. Ted’s artwork is represented by The Ansel Adams Gallery.

From the time the 40 works from the professional YTIO alumni were placed on the walls, teachers, students and the public were decidedly excited about what this represented. The fiftieth anniversary for Young Talent was momentous.

A dinner was held on April 9, to honor those alumni who were exhibiting and others who had been winners of scholarships during those fifty years. OAEA board members and other members and guests were also invited. Those in attendance were delighted to hear how influential being a part of Young Talent had been to the lives of those who had continued on as a professional artist in so many different art fields.

This year’s YTIO catalog also included the bios of those artists and gives a broader view still of the impact of YTIO. The alumni were eager to share their experiences as artists and encourage the upcoming new talent as seen in this year’s Young Talent in Oklahoma Student Show. Students in attendance at the awards ceremony on April 10, were able to hear a few words from YTIO alumni artist, Martha McFarland Goetz. She gave the anniversary YTIO pin to those who received recognition for their work.

The consistency and importance of this showcasing exhibition and competition was obvious. The event was backed by donations from many sources. Past OAEA presidents, YTIO past chairs, interested teachers and public all contributed to this historic event.

Many Many thanks to Bob Curtis, Karen Kirpatrick, Teresa Hutter and the raft of other contributors and volunteers for making this possible.
